In many ways it is hard to believe that it has been two years since New Zealand music icon and luminary Malcolm Black passed away. Perhaps best known to many as co-writer and frontman of the Netherworld Dancing Toys, Black wore many ‘hats’ during his lifetime, including those of musician, record executive and lawyer. Yet first and foremost, he was a husband and father. In a fitting tribute, his final album, aptly titled ‘Songs For The Family’, was released today to mark the second anniversary of Black’s departure from this mortal coil.

Upon receiving the diagnosis that his cancer was terminal, Black set about simplifying his life, choosing to focus on what was of greatest importance to him: family, friends, music and meditation. In one of his final interviews, Black commented that “It turns out that being forced to contemplate my death led to a better way of living”.

During a period of great reflection, acceptance and creativity, and just two months before he passed, Black gathered together a group of musicians that he had admired while he was growing up in Dunedin. Producer Nigel Stone co-produced the album along with Black, and were joined by his wife Julia, Jeff Dickie on electric guitars, Robin Murphy on bass, John Hodge on drums, Steve Larkins on keyboards, and Sue Chilton on backing vocals.

The songs that he composed for ‘Songs For The Family’ were a means for Black to process his illness, and ultimately his death. Each and every track on the album resonates with honesty, transparency and absolute beauty. Considering the illness that he was dealing with at the time, Black sounds absolutely supurb. It is a testament to his spirit and resilience. Not only did Black find light in the darkness, but he left a resounding musical legacy for his family, friends and fans alike – one that will quickly capture your heart.

As per Black’s wishes, all proceedes from the sale of the album will go to Otago University’s Centre for Translational Cancer Research, which Julia explains is “a gesture of thanks for the incredible work that they do that he was able to benefit from”.

‘Songs For The Family’ is available on CD and Vinyl via bandcamp now.

Please note, in respect to Malcolm and his whānau we have opted to not do a traditional review or rating on this album. Needless to say it’s a beautiful album from one of New Zealand’s most inspirational people. Just go buy a copy of the album ok!?
