In this classic gig revisited I wanted to share what has been hands down the most crazy, energetic and fun filled set I’ve ever had the pleasure to shoot. For those that are unaware, Antimasque is made up of members of At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta. So the story goes, Antimasque were unhappy about being billed in amongst a bunch of metal bands at a metal festival and then, after catching a bit of flack from the largely bogan audience during their setup Cedric Bixler-Zavala hit the stage firing on all cylinders. From throwing himself around the stage, throwing a jug of boiling water into and over the audience and picking up a road case and attempting to throw that into the audience it was a solid 20 or so minutes of absolute chaos.
I honestly can’t remember the setlist, or even how many songs were performed – I know they started with “Hangin’ In The Lurch” followed by “I Got No Remorse” and I know there was a cover of a random TV show theme song thrown in for sheer WTF value, but in reality it was all over so quickly we were all left standing around in a daze wondering what the hell had just hit us, and wishing that we could witness it all over again.
Hopefully, their much fabled new album “Saddle on the Atomic Bomb” gets a release and they hit the road once again, I for one will be waiting in anticipation!
Did you catch this amazing performance at Westfest 2015? Or have you seen Antemasque at another one of their shows? Perhaps you’ve even been lucky enough to have seen either At The Drive-In or The Mars Volta live? Tell us about it in the comments below!
