Motörhead
19th October 2007
TSB Stadium, New Plymouth, New Zealand
If you speak to any music photographer and ask them what their dream rock gig (or best gig they’ve ever shot) is, Motörhead is always somewhere near the top of that list. I was lucky enough to get the assignment to shoot Lemmy and the rest of the guys from Motörhead for punkas.com, with the only stipulation being “make sure you capture them, moles and all”.This gig was momentous due to the fact that it was the first time I’d ever shot a whole concert digitally, using an old Canon EOS 10D that I’d bought second hand a few weeks earlier. I still didn’t have my head around how this technology worked properly, and unfortunately it shows in these images – but I find them a good example to look back on to see how far I’ve become as a music photographer! Due to the gig being in New Plymouth instead of the usual major centres of Wellington or Auckland (and the fact I was dirt poor at this point in my life) I ended up hitching a ride with a van load of musicians, shooting the gig, sleeping on a complete stranger’s couch after the gig then luckily hitching a ride back home with the same musicians the next day. Rock and Roll!!
Equipment: Canon EOS 10D; Canon EF 28-70mm f2.8L, Canon EF 135mm f2.8SF
