The NZ Music Month Daily Playlist Challenge
18th May, 2018
Compiled by Miss Dom (Dom Nola).
Miss Dom (Dom Nola), is an Auckland based vinyl DJ and an avid vinyl collector. Dom loves nothing better than packing a selection of her vinyl into a crate (preferably with wheels) and taking it out on the town for the night. During Dom’s DJ sets, she likes to bring the party by mixing Punk, Rock, Garage, Soul, & 50s vintage vinyl together, into a rump-shaking eclectic music mix. Dom has played many sets around Auckland venues such as The Kings Arms, Golden Dawn, Whammy Bar, Ding Dong Lounge, & is a regular DJ at The Cross Street Markets.
For a whole bunch of years, Dom has been involved with Auckland radio station 95 BFM – BFM being where Dom really honed her varied musical taste as well as her love for all things radio. Dom originally joined the station as an on-air host, later progressing to full-time positions as Programme Director and Music Director. During her time in the BFM Programming hot seat she took the stations sound musically to the next level. While in that role, Director Dom also taught many BFM-ers (who are now well-respected names in radio today) the basics of on-air presenting. Dom is still involved with BFM today; she is a part-time co-host of the BFM Jazz Show, jumping on the mic here & there with fellow Jazz buddy host Duncan Campbell. Dom’s current involvement with the Jazz Show sees her as the longest-serving female host currently still on-air at BFM!
In 1990, Dom, & BFM Programming colleague Robert Southon, applied to the NZ Commerce Commission to produce a New Zealand Music radio documentary. This new concept was to promote New Zealand music both locally and overseas and to raise awareness of our wealth of diverse local talent. The pair were successful grant recipients and soon got busy producing New Zealand’s first radio documentary of its kind featuring kiwi music, & artist interviews. The show named Crash hot aired weekly across all B-Net Stations as an hour-long show. In 1991 the Crash hot programme aired on 700 college radio stations across the U.S.A and North America. Crash hot was also handed out at the New York Music Seminar on cassette tape that same year. The take-home message (at the time) was that Crash hot was a successful way of shining the spotlight on New Zealand music at home, and more importantly getting it out to a global audience.
Dom was also the manager of two Flying Nun acts in the 1990s; N.R.A (Not Really Anything) and The J.P.S.E (Jean-Paul Sartre Experience) the latter of which she successfully toured with through both Australia and the U.S.A. Fast forward to 2005 and Dom kicked-off a label called Why Records with partner Kevin. They took a punt on an unknown producer duo from the U.S.A called DJ T-Rock & Squashy Nice and over the years they released 3 albums. In 2009 London label Ministry Of Sound made contact wanting to include the track ‘Pretty Girl with a Crooked Smile’ from the duo on their Hed-Kandi compilation. The answer was indeed yes!
In 2013 Dom was invited to provide New Zealand music playlists for the New Zealand pop-up restaurant named Waiheke Yacht Club, which opened on San Francisco’s Pier 29 in conjunction with the Americas Cup. The restaurant was opened by the folks behind the prestigious restaurant Clooney. Dom’s playlists for the restaurant resulted in her curating thousands of hours of New Zealand music for the venue
Dom adores New Zealand Music Month – commenting that to her – NZMM is better than Xmas! Miss Dom’s playlist offers us a tiny selection of her NZ Music Favs from both the past and present. She has also included a couple of native New Zealand bird soundbites within her playlist, as she believes our native bird songs are also an important part of our NZ music heritage and need to be celebrated too!
For the best listening experience, Dom suggests listening to the tracks on her playlist in order, due to her careful music curation. Dom’s inspiration for her playlist is summer, ciders, & chill Sundays. #SupportYouLocalLadyDJs #LoveNZMusic
