NZMM Daily Playlist Challenge: 28/05/18 – Mike Thornton

NZ Music Month Playlist Challenge

The NZ Music Month Daily Playlist Challenge
28th May, 2018

Compiled by Mike Thornton / Mike Shoots Gigs.

A relative newcomer (despite his advancing years) to the world of music photography, Mike has been an occasional contributor of both words and pictures to Ambient Light and has steadily become an essential part of the crew over the last year and a bit.

Mike’s own description of himself in terms of the world of music is as a relatively predictable and largely mainstream listener with absolutely no musical talent of his own. “I possess a spectacular inability to hold a tune myself, but I reckon I’m perfectly happy listening to pretty much anything from 40’s swing jazz (influenced by dad – at 75 still an active band-member (saxophone and clarinet), to 50’s rock and roll (mum was a die-hard Elvis fan), to 70’s disco, Mowtown soul, and punk. Growing up through the 80’s I’ve always had a leaning towards blues-heavy or blues-inspired rock or hard rock, especially when dripping with guitar – always guitar. (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, anyone?)”

Mike admits that this playlist is a group effort, having been curated only in part by himself, with significant contributions from half of his brood; some songs finding their way here through first-born (son Mitchell, 24), and many added by his youngest (daughter Alison, 17).
