Parachute’s ‘Famous Five’ Feature:
Indyah
This week we pick-up our ‘Parachute Famous Five’ series with Indyah – the young Kiwi artist who’s being touted as the next big thing out of Nelson (also the home to Kiwi music blue bloods such as Broods, NIKA and Robinson).
Because of her location and it’s musical genealogy, 16-year-old Indyah Madsen has had an endless supply of inspiration on tap. But make no mistake, she’s a force to be reckoned with in her own right. She’s been writing songs since she was 11 and has a pop sound that’s fresh and unique. You heard it here first – Indyah is a star on the rise.
Who is the best new artist you’ve discovered in the last 6 months?
The best new artist I’ve found would have to be Dua Lipa. Her writing style is the coolest thing ever.
If you could write the ultimate song, what would it be?
Gwen Stefani ‘Make Me Like You’. The absolute best song ever.
What has been your biggest challenge this year in developing yourself as an artist?
Finding my sound that makes me different than everyone else. I’ve been working on this for three years and still am continuing to. It’s so important to be super happy with what you’re putting out, and being certain you’ve found the right direction.
Who is in your musical community?
I’m mainly working with a producer called Brandon Black, which has been amazing. And I’m loving all the co-writes I’ve been doing this year. It’s a lot of fun working with different people.
When did you get serious about making music your career?
When I was seven I sang harmonies for my dad to the song ‘Islands in the Stream’ by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, and I just said to myself , “I’m gonna do this forever”. I’ve never changed my mind.
Who is your ultimate Kiwi icon?
Salmonella Dub are absolute legends. Andrew Penman was my English teacher at school and I thoroughly enjoyed all my music convos that we would have during those classes. Their writing is so different and I love that about them. They have so many small intimate shows and it’s super rad.
Each year Parachute holds auditions to to find emerging Kiwi artists who are serious about making music their career. A handful are selected for the one-year artist development programme, which is tailor-made for each artist. Over the course of a few weeks, Ambient Light will be featuring five young acts on this year’s development programme.
