Still Woozy
18th July 2022
Powerstation, Auckland, New Zealand
Review by Bridie Chetwin-Kelly, with photography by Nikita Weir.
Having only recently caught on to Still Woozy I headed to Powerstation on Monday, just happy to be at Powerstation which is arguably Auckland’s best live music venue. The new venue was an upgrade from Tuning Fork following overwhelming demand. Touring his 2021 debut album If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is which has amassed millions and millions and streams on spotify, I was looking forward to seeing what came out of his, ahem, Goodie Bag.
Sonically, the Californian Still Woozy or Sven Gamsky, has a pop, indie, psychedelic mix of acoustic and electronic instruments which doesn’t really do what he does justice but it works and it’s enjoyable music.
Opener Foley turned it on, as always, and I would have happily paid the same price as Still Woozy to see just them alone. Highlight, So Personal with lead singer Ash’s vocals soaring through the packed to the rafters venue. This is a band that has a massive future in store.
He played all the favourites to the all ages crowd along with my own personal favourite, ‘Pool’ featuring Remi Wolf which is how I originally found Still Woozy. The crowd had a lot of energy for a Monday and so did his band who were extremely fun and extremely dynamic. It’s a special kind of entertainment when the whole band is joining in and having fun with it. Crowd favourites were Cooks (before launching into this he announced that he was getting married in two weeks), and the encore, Goodie Bag which honestly bought the house down. Still Woozy is a strong on stage performer with a fun, enjoyable presence and I wouldn’t be surprised if he made it back our ways sooner rather than later.
It’s very true that kiwi’s love nothing more than a man and his guitar. Still Woozy has garnered a lot of fans in New Zealand and it honestly makes sense, its chill, funky and just purely the kind of music that we love so much.
