T-Pain
3rd February 2017
ASB Baypark, Tauranga, New Zealand
Review by Sammi Sinister, Photography by Matt Henry Photography.
Arriving at the venue for T-Pain I was surprised to see it was to be held indoors. Instantly I thought ‘oh no, hot and sweaty, jam packed’ but I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was also surprised by the seemingly young audience, since most of them would have still been at primary school when T-Pain was a hit!
Once I walked inside I made my way to the side of the stage where I decided was a good spot to watch the action on stage as well as watch the crowd. The aircon was also cranked up so that was a bonus!
The crowd was of average size when Times X Two were performing their set, I actually think there was more people in the line for drinks than the audience, but they did have a really good crowd hype and the audience was definitely interested in what they had to say (or sing/rap for that matter). I like to do a little research on artists I am not entirely sure about, but couldn’t find much online except they are from New Zealand and aren’t signed to a label yet. Definitely some good talent to be discovered there!! Was also great to see some audience interaction!
Once they had finished their set, there was a mix of 3 or so DJ’s swapping around pumping out some real old school bangers that got the crowd wild! Definitely a lot of reminiscing going on by some in the crowd, as well as all the “I can pop lock and drop it better than you” girls. I’m sure I saw a few tight skirts split!
It was 45 minutes before T-Pain made his grand entrance on stage, blasting into auto tune heaven, with all his old school hits such as 2 Step, Cyclone, Buy You a Drank and Im in Love with a Stripper. Definitely took me back at least 8 years to when people said he would be a one hit wonder but yet here he is, numerous number 1 jams. One after the other the hits kept coming; I’m Sprung and Apple Bottom Jeans made the crowd go crazy and I think I may have even swayed my arthritic hips to Booty Work.
T-Pain engaged the audience with his unique style of sound and dance, as well as his fashion sense. He definitely knows how to capture the attentions of people, and deliver a good show.
Although there were a large number of rather intoxicated people, there didn’t appear to be any trouble and there was even a set of boobs on display in the crowd!!
Overall, a good show with above average warm up acts and a great atmosphere throughout.
