Chances are if you haven’t yet heard Wax On Water’s music, you will in the very near future; this London-based electro-industrial rock outfit is set to make some big waves. Wax On Water is the brainchild of extraordinarily talented multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Maya Fire. And it is Fire by name and fire by nature as Wax On Water’s long awaited debut album Procession is poised for release July 6th 2018. Fire set out to create a self-referential album that was both visceral and sonically representative of regaining a sense of self after experiencing a period characterised by fear and a loss of hope for the future. This subsequent journey has resulted in an album that feeds both the soul and the mind.
Fire is a force to be reckoned with; the tone of Procession is firmly set from the opening of first track Army, with its distorted guitar and heavy basslines. This album is brimming with heavy yet melodic drenched in an array of industrial soundscapes demanding the listener’s undivided attention. The album’s first single, Enamour, is equally catchy, incorporating just the faintest dash of retro-style synth beats for good measure. Latest single, Chelsea Fuck, is an irresistible multi-faceted track that effortlessly creeps from one mood to another; the kind of track that raises the hairs on the back of the neck and sends a shiver down the spine – in the best possible way. Having attracted obvious comparison to the likes of Trent Reznor’s How To Destroy Angels, Fire has in fact crafted her own distinctive sound; a style that she has firmly stamped her marked on Unsurprisingly, this album continues to reveal its many layers with each consecutive listen, and it just keeps getting better. Fire has indeed bared her soul on what is a very personal album, and she does it in a creative and captivating manner that is equal parts alluring and confronting.
