About Gramsci:
Paul McLaney is one of Aotearoa’s most prolific musicians. Never one to rest on his laurels, the breadth of McLaney’s musical endeavours is extensive and has continued to evolve. From solo works to Gramsci, the Impending Adorations, Fly My Pretties, and composing for theatre, McLaney’s cannon of work to date is eclectic, seductive and incredible.
McLaney has cast his musical net wide, effortlessly weaving together different genres – from folk to electronica, rock and soaring guitars solos that tell their own stories – creating captivating tales through both his lyricism and musical prowess.
Gramsci, the brainchild of McLaney, has undergone a number of incarnations since the release of their first album ‘Permanence’ in 2000. Over the last two decades the Gramsci moniker has afforded McLaney the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians, with each of the band’s four albums offering different stylings and moods. 2021’s ‘Inheritance’, which also featured Greg Haver (percussion) and Jol Mulholland (guitars), is a sonic tour-de-force which was met with widespread critical acclaim, and deservedly so.
Gramsci’s fifth album, ‘The Hinterlands’ (with Greg Haver and Jol Mulholland returning, along with new recruit Marika Hodgson on bass) is poised for release in early 2022. The forthcoming album, McLaney believes, is the best album he has ever made. If the album’s opening track, and first single, ‘Ourselves’ is an indicative of what ‘The Hinterlands’ has to offer, it promises to be epic to say the very least.
