Yelawolf
4th December 2015
The Trusts Arena, Auckland, New Zealand
It was a bit of a twist of fate that I found myself standing outside The Trusts Arena waiting for the media call to enter the building before Yelawolf were to hit the stage. I had spent the last six months advertising and pimping the Black Label Society gig that was on, the same very night, on the other side of Auckland. I was excited to be shooting Zakk Wylde again (I had shot him years ago when he was playing guitar in Ozzy Osbourne’s band) not to mention checking out Black Label Society themselves. Unfortunately it was not to happen, the promoters of the show suddenly not replying to emails or any other kind of communication. It was then that I was offered the opportunity to shoot Yelawolf for Libel Music.
I had no idea who Yelawolf was (I know, for shame), but I had the night off work and I wanted to make it count so I took up the offer, and the images below are the result. It’s been a very long time since I’d felt that kind of atmosphere at a show – and from the first verse spat out of Yelawolf’s mouth I was an instant fan. It didn’t matter the lighting was terrible (for photography), or that there was only two of us shooting – this felt like a huge dynamic stadium gig, and the first three songs flew by quicker than any band I’d shot before. Yelawolf (in my eyes) is on a fast track to the top, and I’m beyond stoked to have been able to capture these images of this time.
Did you catch this mind blowing performance at The Trusts Stadium? Or have you seen Yelawolf at another one of his shows? Tell me about it in the comments below!
